Procrastination

It has taken me 6 hours to finish a translation of a document that's only 15 pages. But in that 6 hours, I did so many other productive things!

This is my musing of the evening: I think that language teaching is the only career that people believe they can do successfully without any training. WHY?! People don't think they can become doctors without officially learning about the human body. People don't think they can become mechanics without studying and learning how a car works. People understand that, just because you have a body, you don't know enough to be a doctor. They generally understand that, just because they drive a car, they don't know enough to fix one. So the same is true for language! Just because you speak a language, it doesn't mean you can teach it!

Okay. I'll get off my high horse and go back to my translation now. Até mais!

  1. I think there are a few professions that people think they can do without any training. As far as language is concerned, people have to learn to speak CORRECTLY before they worry about trying to teach it. My pet peeve "Where you at?" I'll leave the linguistics to the linguistic people. I'll keep my steno for me.
    Love and miss you,

  2. I feel some people are only book smart. They think if they read something in a book, they know it all. Then there's people like Uncle Perry. He could fix anything without any training. A lot depends on the job and person.
    Love you both,
    Nanny

  3. The people who think they can do a particular job without any training.... Are the same people who tell you how to raise your children when they don't have any themselves. A parent is a job anyone can have, at any age, without any qualifications, and feel they know everything about it. Scary.
You are an amazing teacher and that is all you need to focus on. I do have to ask you when will Makinleigh learn "Br" instead of Brat dolls she says Rat dolls. It is so funny but sounds really sick when she tells people she is playing Rats!!!
    I love you

  4. I've always felt the exact same way about language teaching, I don't know why more people don't actually. If I actually were asked why things are the way they are in language I would not know where to start. Remember the debacle with the foreign boys staying at my place that one weekend? I remember they were all really cautious of how they spoke English around me and would ask, "which verb conjugate is correct" or something to that effect, and I was just like "I'm not Danielle. I don't have the slightest idea what you are talking about." LOL!!!
