Meet Maísa!

This is Maísa. She and Shirley Temple are similar. I didn't see much of the real Shirley Temple, so I don't know if it's a similarity or a difference that this little girl is totally creepy. She has a kids' game show of sorts on TV. She's smart-mouthed and talks like an adult. When she has adult guests, she makes fun of them and mocks them.

Kids can also call into her show to play games with her. Below is a clip of this. From what I can gather, the kids calling are from a different region, so they have an accent (according to Maísa, of course). So they pronounce the more common "alô" (hello?) as "alor." So she mocks them and corrects them. How does anyone from any age group enjoy this?! Try to watch it. Even if you don't speak Portuguese, you'll get the general idea, and you can also hear her creepy voice (for the Spanish speakers, "fala" means "habla," and the rest should be a bit more understandable:

It is very funny in small doses, though. CQC, a Daily-Show-esque program, makes fun of her every week.

Oh, and here's another video where she first announces that her microphone is stuck in her underwear, and then makes fun of the child calling because she can't understand her name, and then says all the numbers in English with a cute Portuguese accent:

You can also hear her say Alexandre's name correctly, since I can't.
Vote! Totally cute or totally creepy?

  1. Let me just say being a long time fan of Shirley Temple... This little girl is NOTHING like her.

  2. I didn't make it through either clip. I'm with A. Tammy. Creepy. Actually, sad that the parents would exploit her like that. I'm sure it would have been worse if I could actually understand what she was saying.
    Love you both,
    Mom
    XOXOXOXOXOXO

  3. Hi Dear
I did watch part of both. She is nothing like Shirley Temple. Shirley T had talent. She was able to sing & Tap Dance. It was also said she learnt her roles in films better than a lot of adults. I not sure of what her age was when she started, around 3 or 4. No I feel very sorry for little Maisa. If she carries on with that attitude she will be immensely disliked as she gets older. What a shame to have her believe it's ok to act like that.

Now I'll get off my high horse but I actually feel sick to my stomach.Like your Mom said. that they would exploit an innocent child in that fashion Love you both xoxoxox

  4. Hi Danielle
I am a Canadian guy living in bumblef##k Brazil and ejoyed reading your blog (especially the traffic rules). I have a Question, if you dont mind me asking, (the WASP in me tells me this is a rather presumptuous query) How much do you charge for private students? Dont worry I have some experience but I dont have a degree in Linguistics so Id deduct 10 or 20 reais from your figure - although I think it would still be too expensive for this market.
    Cheers

  5. Hi Marc,

I assume you're trying to say that you live somewhere far from a big city? ;) Well, I only charge 20 reais per hour, but that's cheaper than any Brazilian tutors I've met. We're also far from a big city, so I charge less than I would in say, Sao Paulo. I could probably get away with charging more, but most of my at-home students are my boyfriend's friends-- other college students. So I think 20 is fair for you to ask, even without formal training. If you're providing the textbooks, you can choose ones that you like. Find out what the schools in your area charge, and try to compete with that. The schools here charge between 25-35 reais per hour, so I try to be competitive.
    I hope that helps!

  6. Hi Danielle
Thanks for your relply. That helps and is kind of what I figured. I think you could be charging more, but I totally understand. (When I taught in Japan all of my privates were really friends of friends or became my friends and I felt guilty about charging them the market rate). Re: textbooks, I think I'll just go with photocopiable material that I have from previous job or use the plethora of material on the internet, unless the student wants to use a text. BTW, I'm in Londrina about 6 hour drive from Sao Paulo but it might as well be an alternative universe. Thanks again.
    Cheers

  8. I can't watch the clips because I'm at work, but from what you have described, she sounds way too advanced to be just another regular girl her age. Do you know who Andy Milonakis is? He's that guy who has that show on MTV and his whole shtick is that he is 30-some years old, but has some glandular disorder that gives him the appearance of a 13 yr old. A normal 13-yr old, you would have no idea anything was wrong with him unless you were told he has that disorder. Anyway, he uses his appearance to play pranks on people for his show. He also raps about very inappropriate things. He is what immediately came to mind when I read the Maisa description.

  9. She looks so reluctant, like a child slave. I knew being a bitch paid well, but I didn't know you could get into it so young :)
