Week of Torture

This week has been insufferable. I´m bored. I´m lonely. The weather shifts from insane heat to crazy storms that turn off the power. I´m at an internet cafe now...which explains the funny apostrophes.

One good thing is that I got a sort of bonus from Old Job. I don´t really understand it, so maybe the Brazilians reading this blog can explain it to me better. It´s called ´´13a salario´´ and it´s an average of the money I made during the other 12 months. I don´t have to pay it back, and it´s not money they withheld...? Just free money? I think so.

So I used a bit of it to go out to sushi by myself. Eating by myself in restaurants is one of my least favorite things to do, but it sounded so delicious and I´ve been so good by cooking all my meals and not buying bombas, so it was kind of a reward. Luckily the waitress chatted with me a lot and asked me lots of questions, so it wasn´t so bad.

This is my last chance to get presents for people, so if anyone wants something in particular, let me know!

xoxox see you sooooooon!

  2. O 13o. salario e comun no brazil, e direito da maioria dos cidadoes, so enjoy it. Thin of it as a xmas present! It's nice that you got one even though you're not a citizen. I wish the USA was this nice to foreigners. I've been living in the US for almost 15yrs, and will be returning home in 2009 (and trying to bring my American BF along)... I did not read the rest of your blogs, but I hope you're having fun

  3. Maybe it's similar to Mexico's aguinaldo, which is a Christmas bonus for the work done during the year. Enjoy!

  4. Danielle,

The famous 13th salary is a full one month salary for a year of work. It is guaranteed by law in Brazil since the 1930's, it is suppose to help the families with the extra expenses during the holidays.
You are also guaranteed by law on 30 days of vacation for every year worked, these are nonnegotiable rights, if you opt out of the 30 days vacation your boss have to give you another monthly salary for that untaken vacation.
Remember, you are legal in Brazil and are entitled for all those perks by law.
I would say it is worth it for you to consult an accountant who will make you aware of all your rights and will also give you instructions on your obligations regarding taxes and such and most likely they won't charge you a dime for the consultation, you can usually find accountants at "Despachante" offices.
Enjoy your trip back home to beautiful California.

  5. My husband told me that if you do the math, it's not really extra money at all. Most places in Brazil pay you by the month, assuming a month is 4 weeks. So if you do the math, 4 weeks times 12 months is only 48 weeks. Since there are 52 weeks in the year, you are missing 4 weeks (or one month) of wages. Hence, the "13th month extra pay". However, in the U.S. most people are paid weekly or bi-weekly so this does not become a problem.
    Weird huh?
