MOVING!!!

Today was the big day!!! Alexandre went to his meeting for the military!!!!!

I have good news, average news, and bad news (but not that bad):

Bad news:
Alexandre wasn't offered Manaus for the military, so that's out.
Alexandre got into a residency in São Paulo, but decided to choose a different one outside of São Paulo because the program is better.

Average news:
Alexandre is guaranteed a spot in the residency next year after doing this year of military service.
That means we'll live in the military city for only 11 months, and we'll have to move again.

GOOD NEWS:

We're moving to the beach!!!!!

I'm going to maintain my policy of not saying exactly where I live on my blog, mostly because I'll still be in a relatively small town. But I'll tell you that it's a beautiful town close to Santos.

Alexandre is going to be making a ridiculous amount of money. So if I were one of those kinds of girls, I could just sit at the beach all day and read books and get my nails done and do nothing productive. But I'm not one of those kinds of girls. So I'll pick up a few students and continue my translations, and clean really well so we don't have to pay for a maid. The goal will be to save up all of that ridiculous amount of money to use during the residency.  So I mean, maybe I'll only be able to spend mornings at the beach, and not the whole day. What a terrible life.

Here are some pictures from where we'll be living, mostly to make you ooze with jealousy:

Can you believe it?!!?!!

Alexandre has to go to training for about a month, so I'll stay home and work. He gets weekends free, so we can go look for apartments during February, and then we'll make the official move sometime in mid-March.

Ok friends back home, if you haven't come to visit me yet, maybe this will motivate you! And if you already have, well, you've already got a visa!

  2. Very cool. Good for you. Good for Alexandre.

Be careful. Think about it. Not hiring a maid is the wrong place to save a couple hundred Reais a month. We have a fachineira who comes just twice a month, so it's not even close to $R200.

Heck - if you do all your own cleaning you will just wind up spending more on moisturizer and manicures.

    Congratulations again!

  3. Hi Jim,

It's more of my own personal value system, and kind of being against the idea of a maid in general. I still haven't gotten used to it or learned to love it, even after 3 years. So if we're in a position where it's harder for me to work, I'll gladly take on the responsibility.

  4. Hey!
You have to specify what "that kind of girl" you're talking about..rsrsr..If you were that kind of Brazilian girl you definately wouldn't be reading books, you would be talking on the cellphone the whole day instead. :P

    The pictures are awesome! Congratulations!!

We share the same values towards having a maid.

  5. Dear Danielle,

    Congratulations!
If you are close to Santos that means you will be close to Sao Paulo too :)
I totally understand your position on maids...
    Good luck on the move!

  6. Good for you Danielle. I know what you mean. I have tried to break down some of these issues by sitting down to lunch with our fachineira, and by often times doing the dishes while she is there, just because I do them always anyway and she need not follow behind us and do everything.

But I do appreciate her doing the windows, the oven, the bathroom, the fridge... Stuff I don't like to clean.

  12. Yay, the beach! This sounds great! I read your latest post before this one and I was really confused when you said you'd be close to Sao Paulo because I was still thinking you were oging to Manaus! I found myself questioning my very basic knowledge of Brazilian geography!

Anyway, I'm so excited for you guys, and good for you for still wanting to work a bit and keep fairly busy :)
